Postdoctoral research opportunity at Baltic Studies Centre

Baltic Studies Centre (BSC) offers an opportunity to develop a post-doctoral research project in the social and environmental sciences as part of Latvian Council of Science’s 1st call for research applications under the 1.1.1.9. activity “Post-doctoral Research”, open to both Latvian and foreign postdoctoral researchers. 

Applicants interested in pursuing their postdoctoral project at BSC (for a maximum duration of 36 months) are invited to send their expression of interest (CV, and one-page outline of their research idea, all documents in English) to info@bscresearch.lv by September 8, 2024. BSC will respond to all applicants by September 13, 2024, and treat all information and personal data confidentially and in compliance with the requirements of GDPR.

Successful applications will be funded by the Latvian Council of Science, and applicants will receive a post-doctoral position at BSC with access to guidance and support from experienced BSC researchers. 

Thematic correspondence with BSC’s areas of expertise and interest would be preferred. Topics may include: 

  • Business models for a circular bioeconomy; 
  • Inclusive health and wellbeing solutions in cities; 
  • Conducive digital ecosystems for agriculture and rural development; 
  • Data economy of a food system; 
  • Sustainable and just land use practices; 
  • Consumer values and behaviour related to food and agriculture; 
  • Food system transformations; 
  • Agroecological transition and practices;
  • Restoration of habitats for wild pollinators; 
  • Transformations of agricultural landscapes; 
  • Valorisation pathways of bio-based waste streams and their life-cycle assessment;  
  • Food waste and loss quantification at primary production stage; 
  • Agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and solutions for climate change adaptation;  
  • Food system knowledge and innovation system; 
  • Design, implementation and monitoring of multi-actor approaches. 

However, topics that go beyond the current BSC project portfolio will also be considered, as long as these are in line with the broader thematic domain of “Knowledge-intensive bioeconomy” identified by the Research and Innovation strategy for smart specialization of Latvia - RIS3.
